There are a couple of things that can cause your laundry to come out of the machine with a bad smell. First of all, a lot of us wash our laundry at a very low temperature. Most laundry detergent can now be used effectively on temperatures as low as 30 degrees Celsius. On top of that, a lot of people use liquid detergents nowadays. This combination of low temperatures and liquid detergents causes a type of mould. This is a greasy substance that is left behind after using the machine and consists of hair, body oils and skin flakes.

Solution

Luckily, there’s a way to get rid of this nasty substance and to make sure it doesn’t come back. Here’s what you have to do: once a month, run a load consisting of only a couple of tea towels. Wash these in the machine at a temperature of 90 degrees Celsius. Don’t use laundry detergent, though, but use a dishwashing tablet! The tablet in combination with the high temperature will make sure your washing machine is nice and clean again and your clothes will come out fresh once more! Another tip: try using powder detergent every once in a while. You will notice the difference right away!
